This new build house is an object within the Sussex countryside and a series of connections to the site topography and the more distant landscape.

A spine wall cuts across the site running East- West. The house, out building and driveway are set out either side of this wall.

The house is composed of an elevated black timber box containing a compact set of bedrooms, with the space underneath the box forming a large, rectangular, open plan volume for the living areas. The black timber box is pulled away from the spine wall and this area is glazed with a long linear roof light. The black timber box overhangs on the short end elevations, which do not give a sense of the size of the house- or that this is a house. The elevation to the south consists of a single glazed opening within the 21m long local Horsham stone spine wall. The elevation to the north is highly glazed at ground level, the overhang of the box creates a covered linear verandah. At first floor, facing north, a long slot window within the black timber box frames up views from the bedrooms, bathroom and study to the distant hills.

The project provides a modern family home and creates a unique rural setting and sense of place.

The staircase and kitchen were fabricated by a local woodworker.
